Another shot of the front door. This is taken from the opening that leads to the stair hall. One of my jobs that I wanted to do this last summer was to strip the front door. On closer inspection, I found that the door has been swapped aorund. The hinges were originally on the right and the knob on the left. If I strip it as is I'll end up with mulitple knob holes and hinge mortises. I'm not sure what I want to do at this point. Here you can see the cove ceilings that grace the foyer, parlor and den. All of the original lath and plaster is intact in all the downstairs rooms. They were skim coated with a drywall material and "textured" so they don't have the smooth finish but still look pretty good. Only folks with that plaster eye can really notice. Each of the main rooms (parlor, foyer and den) once had ceiling fixtures that were removed.

Ayers > Shot of the den from the foyer. The fireplace is a "poured stone" fireplace that emulates a set in place stone fireplace. It's original but I have not seen this type of fireplace in other area homes. The P.O. put a faux finish on it that I have not removed yet.

The original built in bookcase are still there on each side of the fireplace but are missing the doors and leaded glass. I have stripped the window and the built-ins are next. Some of the windows downstairs are missing the cap moldings on the top of the windows. It was removed to accommodate "modern" window coverings that have since been removed. I'd also like to install some stained glass in the small windows on each side of the fireplace

Ayers > This is a shot toward the dining room and the living room from the entry to the Den. It shows the opening to the living room and a separate opening to the stair hall. The door to the stair hall has been removed. There may also be pocket doors hidden in the doorway to the dining room. I have not removed the trim yet to look. I'm afraid of what I might find ;-)

Ayers > A shot of the stairs going up. Ugly red carpeting and more painted trim. I peaked under the carpet and unfortunately the wood stair treads have been removed (darn). I haven't pulled up the carpeting as I'm waiting until I can replace the wood treads.

Ayers > Whole House fan I had installed last year. Best money I've spent. I love it during the spring and fall and cool summer nights. The louvers are open so the fan is running right now.

Ayers > I was playing around with a drafting program and laid out this floor plan of the first floor. It shows the relationship of the rooms to each other. The sunroom, laundry and closet along the back of the house were originally the back porch of hte house and was subdivided into smaller rooms. The walls the divided the space were not well donw so it'd bee easy to take down. I like the sun room as is but am seriously thinking about removing the wall to the "closet" to open the back corner.
